What is New
The introduction of the all-wheel-drive i4 xDrive40 with 396 horsepower (hp) and 443 lb-ft of torque is a notable update for the 2022 BMW i4 lineup. This model is part of the first-generation i4 series, and it offers enhanced performance and traction with its all-wheel-drive system compared to the previously available rear-wheel-drive variants. The i4 xDrive40 is an electric vehicle (EV) that combines the benefits of BMW's electric technology with the added stability and control of all-wheel drive, making it an appealing option for those looking for a high-performance EV with AWD capabilities.

Overview

The 2024 BMW i4 represents a remarkable entry into the world of all-electric luxury sedans and stands as the most budget-friendly electric vehicle in BMW's extensive lineup. Essentially, the i4 is an electrified iteration of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, closely resembling its counterpart both in terms of interior and exterior design. Moreover, the technology and driver assistance features from the 4 Series Gran Coupe seamlessly transition into the i4, which is undeniably a positive aspect. Unlike some of its electric counterparts that deviate significantly from their manufacturer's conventional internal combustion engine models, the i4 proudly maintains the quintessential BMW identity while harnessing the power of an all-electric drivetrain.

Engine and Performance

The BMW i4, particularly the eDrive40 model we tested, offers respectable performance with a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds, on par with similar rear-wheel-drive EVs. It handles daily driving effortlessly, with responsive brakes and one-pedal driving to reduce fatigue in traffic. However, it falls short of being a true sport sedan. While quick, its handling lacks the expected BMW precision, with light but feedback-lacking steering and a somewhat unsettled feel during aggressive maneuvers. The i4's traction and handling on tight roads leave room for improvement, making it less sporty than anticipated for a BMW.

Price

The top-choice in the lineup is undeniably the high-performance M50, outshining the less potent eDrive35 and eDrive40 trims. The M50 boasts an aggressive appearance as standard, complete with 19-inch wheels that add to its visual allure. Its suspension is masterfully tuned, striking the perfect balance between exhilarating performance and city-friendly comfort. Furthermore, the M model features upgraded brakes with eye-catching blue calipers. While the optional 20-inch rims and their grippier tires enhance performance, they do reduce the M50's estimated range from 270 to 227 miles. To elevate the interior experience, consider options like vernasca leather, the Premium package (which includes ambient interior lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, and lumbar support), as well as individual choices like adaptive LED headlights, ventilated front seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, and wireless charging.

Exterior

The exterior design of the i4 is a harmonious blend of modern elegance and sporty sophistication. Its sleek and aerodynamic profile is accentuated by clean lines and a striking front grille, which, in the case of the electric i4, is adorned with a subtle yet distinctive pattern. The seamless integration of the charging port adds a futuristic touch, while the dramatic rear roofline gives it a coupe-like allure. Overall, the i4's exterior design perfectly embodies the marriage of luxury and performance that BMW is known for.

Interior

The interior of the i4 exudes luxury, boasting rich appointments that include options like rose gold trim, white leather upholstery, and elegant light wood trim. While the overall layout remains in line with other BMW models, the i4 distinguishes itself as the first to feature a massive and seamless display that spans nearly two-thirds of the dashboard. This four-door sedan also showcases a striking rear roofline, resembling a coupe-like profile, but it retains a traditional trunk at the rear for added practicality.

MPG and Fuel Efficacy

As per the EPA ratings, the most fuel-efficient i4 model is the eDrive35 equipped with standard 18-inch wheels, achieving impressive ratings of 122 MPGe in the city and 119 MPGe on the highway. Opting for the larger 19-inch wheels slightly lowers these figures to 111 MPGe in the city and 107 MPGe on the highway. On the other hand, the high-performance M50, while delivering impressive power, sees a decrease in efficiency, with the EPA awarding it ratings of 94 MPGe in the city and 98 MPGe on the highway. These figures further drop to 79 MPGe in the city and 80 MPGe on the highway when equipped with the available 20-inch wheels. In real-world testing, our long-term i4 xDrive40, covering approximately 2700 miles, has averaged a observed 71 MPGe, notably less than its EPA estimate of 100 MPGe. It's worth noting that a significant portion of these miles were accumulated during extremely cold weather conditions, with temperatures barely reaching above zero degrees Fahrenheit for over a week.

Safety

The 2024 i4 boasts a range of both standard and optional driver-assistance technologies to enhance safety. For comprehensive crash-test results and further information on the vehicle's safety performance, it's advisable to visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features encompass:
Safety Features
Blind Spot Monitor This system employs radar or cameras to activate a light or symbol in or near the external mirrors, alerting the driver to the presence of another vehicle in the adjacent lane, which might be concealed in the car's blind spot.
Lane Departure Warning This system notifies you when your car drifts out of its lane without using turn signals. By employing cameras or lasers to track lane markers, the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system can trigger a sound, flash a dashboard indicator, and/or cause the steering wheel or seat to vibrate.
Accident Avoidance System This feature alerts you if you are rapidly reducing the distance to the vehicle ahead without applying your brakes. Should you disregard the warning, vehicles equipped with collision avoidance technology will automatically activate the brakes for you.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert These systems detect vehicles that could intersect your path while you're reversing, providing assistance when you back out of parking spaces or driveways.
Driver Attention Alert These systems ensure the driver remains attentive and not distracted or dozing off, issuing a warning if needed. Some employ a camera to monitor the driver's eye movements, while others assess the movement of the steering wheel to detect inattention.
Pre-collision Safety System The Pre-Collision Assist system utilizes camera technology to identify a potential collision with a vehicle or pedestrian that is directly ahead of your vehicle, functioning effectively both during the day and at night.
Post-collision Safety System Post-Collision Braking system automatically engages moderate brake pressure upon detecting an initial collision. This system's onboard sensors communicate with the restraint module, taking into account factors such as airbag deployment or activation of the fuel cutoff switch.
Stability Control This feature aids in maintaining control during curves and emergency steering maneuvers by stabilizing your car if it starts to deviate from your intended path. What it does: It operates automatically to assist the driver in keeping control of the car during intense steering actions.
Traction Control A traction control system (TCS) is often a subsidiary feature of the electronic stability control in production motor vehicles. It's designed to prevent the driven road wheels from losing traction. TCS becomes active when there is a mismatch between throttle input, engine power, torque transfer, and the conditions of the road surface.
Ventilated Disc Brakes To enhance cooling, front disc brakes in vehicles are typically ventilated. In high-performance cars, wheels designed for optimized airflow can further aid this cooling function. Ventilated disc brakes are straightforward to use, ensure a reliable deceleration, and thereby can help prevent accidents or lessen their severity.
Emergency Braking Preparation Emergency braking systems are designed to prevent collisions by detecting imminent closeness to moving or stationary vehicles ahead, as well as pedestrians. These systems prime the brake system for potential emergency braking, enabling full braking power to be deployed more quickly.
Emergency Braking Assist Brake Assist (BA), also referred to as the Brake Assist System (BAS), is a cutting-edge, driver-adaptive safety technology crafted to optimize brake force in emergency situations. As a key element of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), it activates in response to a driver's sudden, panic-induced or emergency braking actions.
Tire Pressure Monitoring This system keeps track of the air pressure in each tire, alerting the driver if any tire's pressure falls below a predetermined percentage of its recommended level.
Anti-theft Alarm System
Brake Drying The brake disc drying function is designed to enhance safety in heavy rain. It works by periodically pressing the brake pads against the brake discs at set intervals, effectively wiping away excess water. This process ensures a more immediate full braking effect and can significantly reduce braking distances.

Rating and Assessment

The xDrive40 emerges as a compelling choice in the lineup, offering a noteworthy EPA-estimated range of 307 miles, all-wheel-drive capability, and a robust 396 horsepower. Positioned between the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 and the higher-powered M50, it strikes an appealing balance. Regardless of the chosen model, consider opting for the Premium package, which includes a head-up display, heated front and rear seats, and a wireless charger. Additionally, the Driving Assistance Professional package provides valuable driving aids, particularly beneficial in navigating congested highway traffic.
